Official Card Back Preview: Heroic Naxxramas, Icecrown, and A Mystery!

Along with the massive card reveals from Curse of Naxxramas, some of the future card backs started to surface as well on the Hearthstone Facebook Page. I was just talking about card backs a few days ago, so I’m delighted to see these new designs.
Heroic Naxxramas Reward
This is one that I’m sure many people will have in their sights as they progress through the wings of Naxxramas each week. After defeating the bosses on Normal mode, you will also be able to challenge them on Heroic mode, which is supposed to ramp the difficulty of the battle up significantly according to Team 5. Who doesn’t love a good challenge? Your reward for beating all of the bosses on this mode will be this lovely green and gray card back. This will certainly give my Black Temple card back a run for its money as top card back.
Icecrown
This card back will be the reward for achieving at least Rank 20 in Season 5, coming up next month. I now retract my last statement. This card back will easily be the new number one, at least for me. Despite my favorite color being green, this just looks way too cool. I can imagine a nice soft blue glow from the middle, too. I don’t play World of Warcraft, but according to friends and research, Icecrown Citadel is the final raid instance in Wrath of the Lich King, where you fight the Lich King himself, Arthas. Seeing as the Naxxramas card back was released to coincide with its adventure mode release, this may quell some rumors that the next adventure would be Icecrown Citadel. Or does it fuel the fire?
Mystery Card Back
Lastly, this little pretty was also included in the recent reveal and I have no idea what it’s for. Simply labeled as an upcoming reward, it’s open to intepretation as to how players will be able to add this card back to their collection. Going off of history, the only time we saw card backs before we knew what they were were: a. the one for achieving Legend rank in a season; b. the one for playing three games via Players Near Me (Fireside Gathering promotion); and c. the Rainbow back that ended up being the reward for achieving at least Rank 20 in Season 3. So, my friends and fellow theorycrafters, what do you think? Season 6 back? A special event reward?
UPDATE – After conferring with our fearless leader, Eldorian, I actually am leaning towards this being a card back for community involvement; namely, involvement with The eSports Association (TeSPA). For a short history lesson, you should recall that TeSPA teamed up with Hearthstone to put on the collegiate tournament that had its finals at PAX East earlier this year. If you visit this link on TeSPA’s membership benefits, you’ll see that at 80 members, a Hearthstone in-game reward is noted. Also, look at their logo and look at this card back. Seems compelling to me!

First off that heroic card back is quite disappointing. If that’s all I get for completing the game in Heroic mode I might not even bother(probably still will). The blue one is awesome though, very nice looking card that makes me wish death knights were in this game even more.
Finally, that last card, I hope it isn’t a community event type thing because it looks really nice and I don’t think ill be able to participate in any community events.
Heroic mode is so awesome (at least to me it is) that you’ll be compelled to complete it once you have had the 1st taste (:
ok i like the heroic mode but as soon as finished it i was so disapointed that there was nothing for reward…
at least put 1 uncomon golden or some dust, but now it is useless… the card back doesn’t help me in any way…i have card baks and i don’t even use them…
I’m in agreement that it feels kind of weird (at least with the way that we’re only getting one wing at a time currently) that at the end of finishing a Heroic set for a wing, there’s no fanfare or anything. I get that when the full adventure is released, someone might beat the entire thing on Normal first and THEN grind Heroic and then boom, here’s your card back. But right now, it feels rather underwhelming.
I get why they only went with a card back though. It’s more for bragging rights; kind of like the Legend card back.
Yea just Maexxna(or however you spell her name) and sure enough I just logged right out. Definitely an oversight on their part, it didn’t even feel like I’d achieved anything because nothing happened.
I’m not even asking for golden cards, but some kind of reward for clearing every wing on heroic would have been nice.
I agree about the card back being a disappointing. Golden cards would have been nicer. The only other complaint I guess I have with this new adventure, would be having to craft the gold cards from our dust outside of the adventure itself. Blizzard were too afraid to lock the goldies behind the heroic mode… and now we get the card back.
Aside from those issues, I love the format of Nax.
Also, the board is nice, as is the music.
ps. I’ll be using the blue card back once I get it. It’s my favorite so far. With all these card backs, it would be nice to be able to assign a back to each of our custom decks.

I’m all about having the latest and greatest so I usually rock the previous month’s back for the newest season. The rainbow is growing on me and I haven’t used the BT one since. I like the card back idea but very soon there’s going to be too many to choose from and I will have to roll a 24d to see which one I use.
Fun fact: you can change your card back during a game. I don’t know if your opponent sees this change or not.
I actually didn’t know that! We’ll have to do some testing to see if your opponent can see the change. Very cool. 🙂

I think it is fine to have a card back for completing Heroic, because that is the kind of thing you go into casual with and half of the time people just insta-concede if they know how you got it. Golden cards would be nice, but I feel like if you were you get the golden versions of the rewards for beating it on heroic you could be swimming in so much dust that it would be insane.

The mistery card back could just be the next fireside gathering card back… Fireside… Flames… It’s just a guess.
