BlizzCon 2017: Hearthstone Developer Interview Yong Woo and Dan Emmons

by - 6 years ago

John @KickedTripod and Ray @PG_rayC from the Well Met podcast, and the BlizzPro crew, sat down for an interview with Hearthstone‘s lead producer Yong Woo and systems and content designer Dan Emmons.

They discuss the new expansion, Kobolds and Catacombs, the new singleplayer mode, Dungeon Run, and more.

Highlights

  • Events like Hollow’s End give something refreshing to do after an expansion has been out for a while.
  • Going forward with events, they want to do more things like dual-class arenas.
  • New game mode: Dungeon Run. Includes many new effects, new art, 48 new bosses, voice overs, and more. Oh, and it’s free to play.
    • Should be challenging and fun regardless of your collection and experience.
    • The new mode was a good fit for the fantasy of delving into a classic dungeon in an RPG.
    • Now have a dedicated mission team focused on making singleplayer content to go with big card releases.
    • Scale of content with this new mode is huge compared to preceding expansions–the new, larger team makes crazy features like this possible.
  • The team works much farther ahead now due to its increased size.
  • If the meta swings toward weapon destruction after the expansion goes live, the team will decide if they need to step in and make changes.
  • Legendary weapons allow every class to wield weapons.
    • Wanted to make sure all 9 classes have loot to aspire to in the new mission.
    • Although all classes get weapons, they more compliment class identity rather than homogenize them.
    • Some weapons have gained sentience and will comment on your playstyle and progress.
