Season 42, September 2017

Four weeks after the release of Knights of the Frozen, Season 42 is just getting started. The meta has settled a bit, but there are still new decks invented frequently. Druid is the undisputed dominant force right now, but this could be changing soon (upcoming Druid changes). This article is intended to highlight some solid alternatives to Druid that might take over as top dog if Druid gets nerfed, as well as some innovative and/or niche decks that you might want to try out during the climb to make it less stale.

Traditional ladder-climbing wisdom is to stick with one or two top-tier decks, but from my experience testing out other decks is still worthwhile. First, it helps stave off boredom from playing the same deck over and over again. Second, it helps you recognize rare decks and enhances your ability to understand their win condition when actively playing. I think testing new decks is especially valuable while climbing lower ranks or near rank floors, where losing some games do not matter as much.

Lists: What and Why

The lists presented below are a selection of top tier and niche decks I think you should keep your eye on. It is not intended to be complete. Being selfish, I included a deck I adjusted myself with the base idea being from a player named nfin1te, whom I met on the ladder. I included two Highlander Priest lists, including Strivecro’s anti-Jade Druid build, which might be less relevant after any Druid nerf hits. In general, Highlander Priest has evolved to more consistency including more low cost card draw and fewer big minions. Secret Mage is back again, as it is particularly good at out-tempoing slower decks like Jade Druid. Murloc Paladin is still a force to be reckoned with different list out there. I picked a more recent by 7ack, but it is by far the only viable one. If you want variation in this sector, I recommend the lists by Findan too, which is a bit more unusual.
