If you’re good at HearthStone, online cups have always been a good way to grab some cash as well as testing your deckbuilding net-decking skills against other players who are just as try-hard as you. However in recent times with the added plus of giving HWC points there’s even more of a reason to play them, especially if you want to play in the prelims and you’re not the type of player who wants to grind the last few hours of the season to get top 100 legend on ladder.

My recent success

Recently, I won two 256 man open online cups back to back, winning 18+ matches in a row and grabbing 6 HWC points. It all put me to #1 on their Elo system which ranks 1000’s of completive players. https://strivewire.com/tournaments/hearthstone/hall-of-fame

I have placed in top 3 of over 50 online cups at this point so I feel confident that I can steer people in the right direction.

Read the rules

Rules differ hugely from event to event so make sure you read them in advance, and see if there are any ways to gain an edge. You don’t want to end up with a default loss for a silly reason.

Warning: there are scumbags out there who will do whatever they can to get a win, just follow the rules to a letter and screenshot any violation, here are some tips.

TAKE SCREENSHOTS if you feel anything fishy at all is going on, admins may ask to see them, examples are:

-You disconnect

-Your opponent disconnects

-Your opponent leaves the match screen

-The floating card bug appears.

-You see your opponent editing their collection.

You can often ask for a screenshot at the start of a match to verify that only 1 deck per class is in your opponent’s collection. To make sure the screenshot is valid make sure to check that:

  • The time matches current time (remember time zones are a thing).
  • The friend list is closed (this can hide an arrow on the left if they have 2 pages of decks).
  • There are no arrows on either side or they sent you 2 screenshots
  • You can see your name somewhere on the screenshot.

You can see an example below.

Normally, rules let you change deck lists between rounds (since there’s no way for admins to check you don’t), if you play on a site like Battlefy you can exploit this by seeing your opponent’s classes before challenging them, letting you tech against their decks. (Example: If they are playing 3 weapon classes add oozes and Harrison to your decks).

Well run tourneys for HWC points

These are the ones I play and recommend (have good rules and admins)

Here are all cups that give HWC points:

Remember that you’re never favoured to win any these cups even if you’re the best player in the world. It’s a grind, just like ladder. Keep playing and eventual you’ll win. Don’t let unlucky losses bring down your mind-set, good luck!
