Bane of Doom Infographic for “Wild” and “Standard” Play Mode

by - 8 years ago

Well met! It’s OtakuMZ again with another Hearthstone Infographic. Before I start, I am happy to announce that I am now a proud member of the blizzpro team – feelsgoodman. Thank you to all of you for giving me such a warm welcome and help to settle in. For you, the readers, this means for you that I will publish infographics on a regular basis in the future. The exact schedule is not definite at the moment. With my templates finished, I will be able to produce infographics in a shorter amount of time. I think we will settle the releases somewhere in between every 1-2 weeks .

Back to the Topic at Hand … This time I dove into oblivion and return to you with Bane of Doom (BoD). This card has almost everything the Demon tribe offers in it. As I was collecting ideas for future infographics I realized that there are several similar cards hidden in several other cards, e.g. Gorillabot A-3 for Mechs, Tomb Spider for Beasts, Shredders for 2-drops, 4-drops and legendary cards, and so on. It seems to be a theme that the developers are were eager to grab once in a while. Therefore I will get to similar cards in the future and I will cover the whole tribe in the infographic atop as I have done with BoD and the demon tribe in today’s graphic.

After crunching all the numbers I can conclude that Bane of Doom is well worth the cost of 5 mana. If you take my calculations to measure the value of each Demon card plus the two damage the card provides, the mean value is about 5.71 Mana.

You might ask “But MZ, how did you conjure up with that value?” Well, I first calculated the value of each demon without BoD’s effect. Some cards lose here, some gain significantly. Stat-wise, I have taken the approach that is described in an article on liquidhearth. This was an easy enough method for me to understand. I know, it is not perfect, but it is a good approximation and not too complicated. Then I added bonus points for the different abilities and deathrattle effects or subtracted points for negative effect.  In the end, I added the equivalent of 1.33 mana for the two damage.

Why 1.33? Normally, 2 damage are worth 1 Mana. I added a 0.33 bonus because first, warlock cards are normally a little overpriced and second, because IMO it is worth a bonus that two effects come together in one card. Nevertheless, even without that bonus the mean value of  BoD would be 5.38 mana.

So, depending on how you measure the value, Blizzard awards you with a bonus of 0.38 to 0.71 mana for giving your game to RNGesus. And to be serious, 5 mana for 2  damage and a Mal’Ganis on top feels so good 😆 . Do you take the gamble? I’ll take it!

Update 1 (pre-release)

Standard and Wild play mode were announced recently. The original infographic is for Wild. I created a second infographic, with updated statistics, and marked the changes. For explanation to those who are still not familiar with the new formats: in Standard, only cards that are legal to the format can be summoned. For further information which card swill drop out, there is an article by DannieRay23 and an infographic by myself which you can check out.

As it stand now, the card loses significant value down to 4.46 mana . This is really sad for this awesome card. It is also a hard nerf for the demon tribe in general, mostly because of two powerful and synergistic cards phasing out: Mal’Ganis and Voidcaller.

I will update the infographic as possible nerfs and the new Spring 2016 set are introduced.  I really hope that Blizzard will introduce some new and powerful demons to render BoD a card viable again and help the demon tribe in general.
