Deck of the Week: Dragon Control Warrior

by - 9 years ago

This has been my personal deck of choice to ladder this past week (and maybe for the next week or so depending on the meta). Control Warrior as a whole has a pretty decent win rate but is pretty boring to play. By adding in a bit of dragon flavor, I have to say that I really enjoy Control Warrior a lot more now. Also, my original thought of Nefarian being a lame card has changed, he does work and has won me quite a few games. I went from Rank 20 to Rank 12 with this deck in the first week and probably could have gone higher if I had more time to play. I’ll most likely talk about it in next week’s Well Met podcast.

So the deck is basically your standard control warrior with the addition of 2 high end dragons that then synergize well with the incredibly powerful Blackwing Corrupter.

The deck isn’t cheap to make as it uses 6 legendary cards. 2 of them can be received through Blackrock Mountain. The other 4 however should be your staple legendary cards you should look into crafting anyway. Especially Sylvanas and Dr. Boom as they can be used in nearly every deck. Alexstraza and Grommash are staples for Control Warrior and should be crafted if this is the style of deck you want to play.

I’m not 100% sold on Chromaggus in this deck yet. He hasn’t single handedly won me games and has died more times than not for the advantage I would get with him by drawing an extra card. Instead, Ysera might be a better pick as she will at least give you immediate benefit.

Deck List

Dragon Control Warrior
Class: Warrior

Warrior (18)

Neutral (12)

Mulligan

I always mulligan for weapons, armorsmith, or acolyte of pain. I always try to make sure I have at least 1 weapon though if I can as it’s important to keep tempo early game. This deck doesn’t really start rolling until turn 5 so the more you can survive early game, the better.

Strategy

This is a control deck. You basically want to minimize as much damage you can early on and just let the deck steam roll late game with big hitters. Always remember that you have Alexstraza which can help you stabilize yourself as your opponent is top decking or it can be used to quickly turn the tides and get them within lethal range. The biggest thing about playing this deck is to be patient. If you have the coin, don’t use it unless you need to (for example playing Face Hunter you might need to coin out a weapon). The deck plays slow and you never want to overreact. You want to make the most efficient trades possible so don’t use 3 cards to try and kill 1 minion. You always want a 1:1 ratio or better and in some cases you might have to do a 2 for 1 trade.

Also remember, Grommash + Whirlwind is 10 damage. Grommash + Cruel Taskmaster is 12 damage.

Isn’t three dragons a little skimpy?
