Hunters get a Nifty New Trick to Call Their Pets

Call for Help

Brazilian Portal Baixakijogos just revealed the first Hunter Card from the upcoming Goblins vs. Gnomes expansion.  It’s Portuguese name is Chamar Ajudante, which is the Portuguese name for the Call Pet spell on World of Warcraft. It’s ability reads like this:

  • Draw a card, if it is a beast, it costs 4 less.

Shaman’s Far Sight immediately comes to mind, as this card works in a very similar fashion, but there’s a pretty big difference. While Far Sight costs 3 and always reduces the mana cost of the drawn card by 3, Call Pet only costs 2, and if and only if you happen to draw a beast you will get a 4-mana cost reduction.

The potential effect of this card far outweights the power of Call Pet, but it is also a much higher Gambit. You are not only wanting to draw a card with 4+ cost, but it also has to be a beast. While a turn 1 coin+call pet into a turn 2 Highmane sounds absurdly overpowered, the odds of pulling that off are slim to none.

A 5 cost King Krush also sounds super sexy, but how often can you pull that off?

Still, the relatively small mana cost means that you aren’t losing that much if your gambit doesn’t pay off, could this card get better value than Flare or Tracking on average? I’m not sure and I don’t see this card making its way into the standard Hunter decks being played right now, then again I’ve been wrong plenty before.

Below is a list of all the beasts of 4+ mana cost currently in the game.

King Krush
Core Hound
Savannah Highmane
Maexxna
The Beast
Starving Buzzard
Stranglethorn
Tundra Rhino
Stampeding Kodo
Oasis Snapjaw

Do you think you can build around this card? Alarm-o-bot Beast Deck confirmed?

Yeah….no.

Doesn’t work on animal companion, or on cards the webspinner puts directly in your hand. That’s a lot of beasts the hunter runs that it doesn’t work on. Maybe you put buzzard back in your deck in hopes of a 6 mana buzzard UTH combo… but I think with most hunter decks you’re looking at a 80% chance of it not giving you a beast. And about a 50% chance of when it does it saves you 1-2 mana.

I wonder if every class is getting a card like this. Can’t think about this one without considering Unstable Portal for Mages.

My thought as well, maybe they’ve created 8 more far sights in hopes that one of them will work. The winning card will probably be the one that allows warlocks to summon doomguards on turn 3.

This is only going to be used if they introduce some kind of “Put the minion on the top of your deck” or “Check the first X cards on top of your deck” mechanics (Magic: The Gathering style).
