Welcome to this week’s “What Would DKMR Do?” Each week we’ll present an in-game situation and discuss the possible lines of play. Here’s the scenario for this week:

WWDKMRD 9 - Hunter v Warrior

There are two crucial decisions on this turn. First, do we remove the Misha or choose not to attack? Second, do we play a minion or Armor Up? If we play a minion, which one? Let’s see what you said!

Anthony said:

Play the Acolyte, and trade into Misha with Taskmaster then Armor smith to gain 2 armor as well.

Anthony has opted to play the Acolyte in order to increase his board presence without giving his opponent a means by which to trigger his Mad Scientist. Mr. Ctrain agrees.

Cosmeagol believes:

trading the taskmaster and armorsmith into Misha is a must, its not great value-wise, but we cant afford to gamble on anything else. Im veering towards Frothing Berserker right now, because it seems unlikely that we could get a better value from it in the near future with the cards we have in hand, whereas the acolyte can be just as impactful in the future.

Ozmodan37 and Izren agree. Better to start frothing now than later!

DrLeg3nd would:

taskmaster then armorsmith into taunt, then armor up,pass turn

So what would DKMR do?

We would play the Acolyte of Pain and attack with the Armorsmith and Cruel Taskmaster to remove the Misha. As all of you identified, we can’t afford to let the Misha live. Not removing it provides our opponent the opportunity to clear our board and keep his Misha or Houndmaster it and put us in an even worse position. The Mad Scientist makes playing the Frothing Berserker awkward. He can suicide the Scientist into the Berserker and put it in range of Explosive Trap. If he gets Freezing Trap instead, we’ve lost any advantage to playing the Berserker initially. Using Armor Up is far from incorrect, but we prefer to make a less passive play and cast the Acolyte of Pain. The Acolyte can also harass the Scientist to draw a card. While the Acolyte will be good at almost any point in the game, Frothing Berserker is particularly weak here.

Next week we’ll be talking about the scenario below. What would you do? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Mr. Ctrain says:

I think I want to flare here. You aren’t going to need it for secrets later, and this allows a turn 1 cycle to explore future options and turn 2 play of undertaker + coin + scientist, getting and immediate buff to undertaker. Assuming Rogue dagger’s turn 2, turn 3 he could poison + flurry to clear, but again that gives you a secret and a clear board for animal companion and he’s burnt a powerful AoE for 2 early game minions. Otherwise, the opponent has a tough call to take out the scientist giving a free secret, or the potentially escalating undertaker, in either case leaving you with at least 1 minion on the board at the start of turn 3. This also puts undertaker out of backstab range.

  2. Stefan Suadicani says:

I would probably pass the turn. Given that it is likely miracle rogue flare is going to have potential use for exposing an auctioneer later, which is likely to be the best target for the Hunters mark. There is not much need to cycle really, the hand provided have a perfect curve for the 2 next turns.
Naked undertaker just runs into Backstab. Undertaker coin Scientist next turn is much stronger.

  3. DrLeg3nd says:

against rogue i would try to be aggressive and have the fast start by coin-hero power, turn 2 hero power again then turn 3 undertaker-mad scientist

  4. Yeran says:

I think Undertaker and Pass is right here. I wouldn’t mind triggering Backstab early especially with an Animal Companion waiting.
Turn 2 Undertaker + Mad Scientist with coin is risky as the rogue can easily win the board with Backstab + SI:7 + leftover turn 2 dagger. The trap won’t really help us there either.

  5. Anthony says:

I would play the undertaker. He either has backstab and deals with it which is fine as it takes a 0 cost spell away from the gadget combo for later, meaning one less card draw in mid game, which can be the difference in beating a miracle rogue. Next turn you would play the scientist either way, and you want to save flare until you either absolutely need a draw or he plays conceal.

  6. Salo says:

Probably just flare to cycle the card. Not gonna need it later.

  7. Josh Gotlieb says:

Undertaker. Whether this is miracle, backspace or tempo we need to put pressure on the board and get ahead. If he wants to waste his backstab on my one drop that’s fine. The last thing we want to do is let a rogue dictate the pace of the game and be able to choose how and when he uses his removal. Waiting on the undertaker doesn’t even buy us much value as he can still remove it fairly easily and it isn’t going to trade up with anything commonly played in rogue even as a 2/3.
