Weekly Spotlight: Stoneskin Gargoyle

by - 10 years ago

With hundreds of minions, spells and weapons to choose from, where do you start? You can start right here: every Thursday, we will feature one card in our Weekly Spotlight and share with you how to use it in your constructed deck.

Ben Brode and other Hearthstone developers have frequently stated that they wanted more minions in the game with the ability to “stick around”. The Stoneskin Gargoyle is a perfect example of that design philosophy.

With only 1 attack, it won’t be able to take out too many minions on its own, but the base amount of 4 health ensures a degree of survivabilty, at least early on. Being able to coin into this minion on the second turn should ensure a good deal of value on the board.

The real benefit of this card is the fudge factor of the “full Health” amount: if Stoneskin Gargoyle is buffed with additional health, for example Blessing of Kings, it will heal itself back up to 8 health instead of the original 4. This makes this minion the quintessential “sticky” minion, or at the very least a real hoover for Silence spells in your opponent’s deck.

It is a minion one simply does not want to see stick around too long if it’s on the opposite side of the board.

The Stoneskin Gargoyle has seen some traction with Priest decks, however one must be cautious of its interaction with the Auchenai Soulpriest, which changes healing into damage dealt. In this particular case, a triggered heal for 2 points would actually cause the Gargoyle to inflict 2 additional damage against itself.

SPOILER: Stoneskin Gargoyle is practically tailor-made for the heroic Heigan the Unclean encounter.
