HearthPro Picks: Favorite Military Quarter Card Reward

by - 10 years ago

We here at the BlizzPro Hearthstone site are rabid fans of the game, to say the very least. Whether we’re writing articles, recording podcasts, or chatting it up with you all in the community over social media, we care a lot about the development of the game and how it’s being received by the players. As a result, that leads to a LOT of thinking about Hearthstone. With all of that thinking, some pretty stalwart opinions develop as well. Enter HearthPro Picks! Each week, we’ll be putting our opinions out in the open for you to agree or disagree with on some part of the game – favorite cards, least favorite changes, and on and on. We hope you enjoy and come banter with us!

This week, we’re continuing with the Curse of Naxxramas theme and picking our favorite card reward from the Military Quarter. Here are the possible options:

Stephen Stewart

– Deathlord –

As a mostly Priest player (I say “mostly” today because I have literally only been playing Hunter this season), I have to give my vote to the Deathlord. One of Priests’ tougher match-ups before this week was the super powered versions of Zoo seemingly spawning stronger and stronger lists each night. If you didn’t draw into an Auchenai + Circle or Holy Nova and some early Smites, the game pretty much ran away from you. Now, the Deathlord is a solid wall for Priests to include and continue to heal up if the Warlock can’t take down the hearty minion that same turn. Even if they do, you’ve staved off some damage to get you to that Turn Four Circle combo or even coin out a Nova on a now damaged opposing board. Even outside of that match up, I’ve been noticing Deathlord doing work against Miracle Rogues as well. The Miracolis need to keep wiping out threats to control the board, but Deathlord’s Deathrattle actually works against them since it will pull out minions that they would rather have complete control over and utilize their Battlecries for the efficient removal or life heal, etc.

This is what Maexxna should have been. If she were a little cheaper, Deathlord maybe wouldn’t be as relevant. As it stands though, I’ll take two in the current meta and see where it shakes out after Naxxramas is fully released because that three spot for Priests will obviously be quite competitive once Dark Cultist enters the fray.

Shoutouts to Spectral Knight of course, which is just insane and I’m still having trouble theorycrafting the best ways to deal with it.

– Spectral Knight –

The Military Quarter gave us several strong cards, but I have to go with Spectral Knight this week. Dancing Swords is a not-awful play in an aggressive tempo deck, but the drawback is definitely enough to give me pause; Deathlord can be very viable as an anti-aggro measure, but is monstrously risky against any kind of control deck. Rivendare, for as cool as a concept as he is, very much feels like a snowball effect – he will be strictly advantageous to players who are already ahead.

Spectral Knight, on the other hand, is one of a total of now three cards in the game (and one of them is a Dream Card from Ysera!) with the “Can’t be targeted by spells or Hero Powers” attribute. His stat valuation is technically light, but more than sufficient – the only five mana minion (or card) that would trade into him alone is Stalagg. With all of the other places that will bait out the limited number of Silences (and even at that, only Druids, Priests, and Shaman can possibly get more than four), this guy becomes an even greater threat as he gains buffs.

If you aren’t already afraid of Spectral Knights, whether on ladder or in Arena, I defer to Master Yoda: “You will be. You will be.”

Most of our staff is out conquering the world, so it’s just Kevin and I splitting the difference this time around. Which card have you all been liking so far? Hop into the comments and let us know.

Spectral Knight all the way. It’s a solid body that can only effectively be removed by trading minions. It has enough threat that it may as well have taunt, which makes it better when you run it behind a minion that actually has taunt. Kind of like how secrets force your opponent to make less efficient plays, the Spectral Knight will force your opponent to do some ridiculous stuff sometimes.

Spectral Knight I think as well, as the Deathlord can have a serious consequence against some decks.
Reincarnate is pretty cool too, as seen below.(I’m sure most of you have seen this). I have used this combo myself for a win when it looked like I was toast.
