HearthPro Picks: Favorite Arachnid Quarter Card Reward

by - 10 years ago

We here at the BlizzPro Hearthstone site are rabid fans of the game, to say the very least. Whether we’re writing articles, recording podcasts, or chatting it up with you all in the community over social media, we care a lot about the development of the game and how it’s being received by the players. As a result, that leads to a LOT of thinking about Hearthstone. With all of that thinking, some pretty stalwart opinions develop as well. Enter HearthPro Picks! Each week, we’ll be putting our opinions out in the open for you to agree or disagree with on some part of the game – favorite cards, least favorite changes, and on and on. We hope you enjoy and come banter with us!

This week, we’re celebrating the release of Curse of Naxxramas and picking our favorite card reward from the Arachnid Quarter. If you haven’t memorized them yet, here are the possible options:

Stephen Stewart

– Nerubian Egg –

For me, the pick is a rather simple one: Nerubian Egg. When you think about a card that is going to give you insane value, I don’t believe that there’s a more prime example. Okay, that’s probably a bit of an overstatement, but let’s think about. Ignore the egg and it can be activated in so many different ways: Power Overwhelming, Blessing of Kings, sitting next to a Flametongue Totem, Cold Blood. That’s barely going into all of the possibilities. And now that you’ve ignored the little egg , just like a Metapod, it’s starting to Tackle back. That’s only the first part of the fight though. Eventually, that egg will hatch and out will come a beautiful Butterfree Nerubian. This minion that you originally saw fit to leave on the board while dealing with other threats has turned itself into a major headache, utilizing at the least two cards and likely earning a 2 or possibly 3-for-1. The other options from the Arachnid Quarter aren’t terrible (Except for Poison Seeds; don’t draft that card ever!), but the Egg just seems to be above and away the card that will see the most use in the most varied decks and present some of the more clever plays that we all love to mastermind.

Marc Huber

– Nerubian Egg –

Nerubian Egg, no question for me. It is a minion you want to sacrifice, because the 4/4 Deathrattle spawn is such an incredible trade-in for this original 2 Mana minion. There are many minions you can use to buff the egg and get an offensive turn out of the 0/2 Nerubian Egg, but the real value is its counter against the Priest’s Holy Nova, the Mage’s Flamestrike, and other AOE board clearing spells. Instead of having nothing left, you now have a minion that’s almost as good as a Chillwind Yeti. That’s quite literally a huge game changer.

Kevin Hovdestad

– Nerub’ar Weblord –

For me, the best card to come out of the Spider Wing in Naxxramas has to be the Nerub’ar Weblord. At 1/4 for 2, it passes the vanilla stat valuation test (which none of the other Spider Wing cards can say!), and it’s a minion that you can build an entire deck around – slowing your opponent’s plays down, knowing full well it won’t affect your own. As a bonus, the Druid ‘Choose One’ cards are unaffected – so expect to see this guy in some seriously anti-meta Druid decks.

Shauna Dawson

– Nerub’ar Weblord –

I’m with Kevin on this pick! I play a lot of Arena where I’ve found this card outshining the rest of the ones available this week. In Arena drafting, many of the highest valued neutral minions are selected for their Battlecry effects. This card has the base stats that are good enough to be chosen as a 2 drop (although admittedly, 1 attack is kind of puny), but it really earns its value by slowing down your opponent and forcing poor trades. 4 Health is quite difficult to handle on turn 3 so you’ll most often get the 2 for 1 trades that help you gain tempo. Played later in the game and protected by Taunt, the Weblord can be quite devastating to your opponent’s options. Easily my pick of the week!

Well, it looks like our staff is split half and half this week with two votes for Nerubian Egg and two for Nerub’ar Weblord. What do you all out there think? Help us break the tie by throwing in your vote in the Comments section!

I have been playing with the Egg and I am a BIG fan of it. I haven’t tried to build a deck around Weblord yet, but as of right now it is completely unplayable in all of my decks. I’m surprised Haunted Creeper gets no love. Sure, it’s not a big game changer, but it’s such dependable value that easily fits itself into any agro or midrange deck. He’s a little 2 mana Golem, who wouldn’t love that?
The other three, well…perhaps the Meta will someday find a place for them.

    • Stephen Stewart says:

Haunted Creeper is definitely a good card, especially for Hunters. I just don’t prefer it over the Egg. I think I would give it my honorable mention if I had one. I think the Anub’ar Ambusher is seeing some play in Tempo Rogue, so that might become a thing once Miracle gets RIPed in pieces.
