[DKMR] WhtPwdr here with another installment of the Deck of the Week. With Naxxramas finally being out we thought we would bring you one of DKMR’s first new variations of the old popular decks with the addition of the new cards you can receive by playing the new adventure mode. We will be looking at our new version of the typical “Handlock”. While the idea of the deck is very similar to the new additions to the deck means that it can be played quite differently than before.

Decklist

Eggsfordays

2x Soulfire: Soulfire is one of the most broken cards when it comes to gaining tempo/board control. With the mana cost being 0 it means that you can cast it whenever you want without sacrificing your own tempo. Be careful not to use it to early though because it might make it hard to get your Mountain Giants in play.

2x Power Overwhelming: This is a situational card that rarely can be justified as being good enough to run 2 in the same deck. However this might be one of the most important cards in this variation of Handlock. Power Overwhelming synergizes extremely well with both Nerubian Egg and Void Terror as well as being extremely useful in a Handlock’s arsenal for that 20 damage Leeroy Jenkins + Power Overwhelming + Faceless Manipulator combo.

2x Ancient Watcher: Ancient Watcher loses some of its power due to the fact that there is no silence in the deck. However with the mass amount of taunt givers and the fact that Ancient Watcher synergizes very well with Shadowflame it is still a very strong card in this deck.

2x Nerubian Egg: This card might have one of the strongest death rattles in the game. It is potentially a 2 mana 4/4 which is insane however downside is that it might be hard to trigger it since you can’t attack. With this deck you have so many ways of doing just that, with Power Overwhelming, Hellfire, 4 taunt givers and even Shadowflame is it quite certain the death rattle will trigger.

2x Sunfury Protector: Sunfury Protector is the cheapest taunt giver in the game. Because you will life tap a lot playing this deck your life total will almost always be dangerously low which makes it important to be able to taunt your big 8/8 giants and Sunfury is the best way to do that.

2x Earthen Ring Farseer: This is a great utility card with many different ways it can be used. Healing for +3 might not seem like a big deal but it can allow you to trade better with your big creatures or simply heal yourself out of combo ranges.

2x Void Terror: Imagine a 16/16 void terror with taunt. That is a very likely scenario with this deck. This card is just overall strong and it synergizes extremely well with Power Overwhelming. Instead of the minion dying the Void Terror gains an extra 4/4 while the minion can attack for 4 extra damage for that turn.

2x Hellfire: Hellfire is a card who’s “job” is to slow down the opponent. This deck does very well against control decks but can struggle sometimes against heavy aggro. Hellfire is there to slow down the heavy aggro decks so that you can get out your big threats.

1x Shadowflame: Shadowflame is very similar to Hellfire in what it is supposed to do. It is a board clear which often is used to slow down the tempo of the opponent so that you can get your big threats out securely. There are many different ways that you can combo Shadowflame in order to get the most out of this card. The most used are Leeroy Jenkins + Shadowflame and Power Overwhelming + Shadowflame.

2x Defender of Argus: Very similar to Sunfury Protector in the fact that it is in the deck to be able to taunt up your big creatures so that you can’t be rushed down. The only difference is that it cost 2 more mana and it gives the adjacent minions +1/+1 as well.

1x Leeroy Jenkins: Leeroy Jenkins is mostly seen as simply a card you use to finish off your opponent however in this deck it has a few more uses. There is of course the 20 damage finishing combo with Power Overwhelming and Faceless Manipulator. However you can also use Leeroy with Shadowflame to become a 8 mana 6 damage AOE to all opponent minions. Just all around a good card, synergizes well with the deck, and a strong finisher.

2x Twilight Drake: This deck is very reliant on 4 drops, meaning that you can start building your board on turn 4. One of the ways you can do this is with Twilight Drake. Generally when played on turn 4 it is a 4/9 or a 4/10 depending on if you went first or not or can be coined on turn 3 for a 4/8. The only downside to this card is that it is very vulnerable to silence since it will become a 4/1 if this happens.

1x Faceless Manipulator: In this deck Faceless Manipulator is mainly used for 2 different things. Either it is used to combo with Leeroy Jenkins and Power Overwhelming to finish your opponent off or it is used to copy either a twilight drake or mountain giant on turn 5, if they have stayed alive.

2x Siphon Soul: This is the only hard removal except for Soulfire and sure 6 mana is a lot for a hard removal, but it works well in this deck. If you have a giant on the field and then they play a big minion, if you siphon soul it the game usually just avalanches from there for a victory.

1x Sylvanas Windrunner: One of the few legendary cards in this deck. Sylvanas Windrunner has seen a few nerfs and a 5/5 for 6 mana might not seem extremely strong however Sylvanas synergizes extremely well with many of the cards in this deck which makes her a very strong addition. It is not often that a turn 6 Sylvanas on an empty board is a great play but if you use her with for example Shadowflame or Power Overwhelming her deathrattle will trigger which is why she is so strong.

2x Mountain Giant: One of the stronger turn 4 plays in the game. This will usually be one of the first threats you play when playing this deck. Can’t ask for much more than an 8/8 on turn 4. If you get this minion out and they’re unable to take care of it, combined with a turn 5 faceless, some games can finish on turn 6. One of the must-have cards of the deck.

2x Molten Giant: With 4 taunt givers and having such a slow start, this card can single handedly win you games against aggro decks such as zoo. Sometimes you can get out turn 4 or 5 double taunted 8/8 or 9/9 molten giants if they don’t strategically play around them. These cards can also be a contender in the control matchups lategame. Even with all of the burst going around in decks lately, it’s hard to completely play around Molten Giant and at least one of them are bound to come out eventually.

Mulligans

With this deck the mulligan is quite easy. You always want to mulligan for Mountain Giant and Twilight Drakes. If you already have one or two you can consider keeping some of the other early minions like Earthen Ring Farseer, Sunfury Protector, Nerubian Egg, etc. It is however quite important to take into consideration what class you are playing against since some cards are better in some matchups. For example Hellfire is almost always a must against Shaman while a card like Ancient Watcher is very good against aggro decks like Zoo.

Game Plan

There are many different ways to win with this deck and mostly it depends on what deck you are playing against. Most often you win by outlasting your opponent by keeping of pressure with your big 8/8 or 4/8 creatures. Usually, other decks will have to trade very inefficiently in order to clear your threats and this allows you to gain card advantage and board control. By aggressively mulliganing for your 4 drops you can insure that this strategy will succeed most of the time. Your hero power is one of your greatest strengths while playing this deck, it allows you to draw into your big cards while still getting low enough to be able to play your Molten Giants. You always have to be wary about your life total though since many decks run big combos that can do a lot of burst damage.

Final Thoughts

We hope you enjoyed this deck and get a chance to play it! Keep track of this deck and how well it is doing at http://www.hearthstats.net and let us know if you like it! This is a really fun deck and can be used on the ladder and in tournaments too!

I do not see the viability of this deck as you are ideally playing an egg or an ancient watcher and then absorbing it with a void terror. This puts your hand size very low and in turn makes mountain giants almost completely dead cards. Also why would you absorb giants with void terror? If you absorb a giant you are getting rid of a big threat to create a bigger threat which is still able to be BGHed and on top of that able to be silenced. In my experience a giant is good enough. This problem becomes compounded if you absorb 2 giants or a giant and any other creature. Hand lock also has been going the way of more taunts due to the meta game nature. You would think a team that writes the meta report would know this. Lastly a 16/16 void terror is not very likely to be created as the only way to create this would be to absorb sylvanas and a giant or something even more rare. I do not think that is very likely.

You don’t void terror giants with this deck unless it’s damaged, it’s for nerubian egg and ancient watcher. You don’t play them early on, you play them during the mid game after you’ve already got your twilight drakes and mountain giants out.

Thank you for confirming my point. dkmr mentioned making 16/16s as a frequent occurrence. I do not believe that is the case as it is not optimal. Also you didnt address the need for more taunts in the meta. Guess you dont have to go for that type though.

I’m not sure why you keep bringing up the need for taunts, If you play this deck wisely, you can get 8 taunts. That is quite sufficient if you ask me.

Very fun deck to play. I like the addition of Void Terror. It’s great using it to activate egg’s deathrattle or even an early watcher if you don’t draw your Mountain Giants or drakes. I especially love using it on Sylvanas for a very nasty combo. However, because it is a very situational card, I dropped one in favor for an Ironbeak Owl. It helps to activate watcher or get around taunts.
That said, the deck totally gets wrecked by Hunter and Zoo.

    • [DKMR]Kisstafer says:

I could see an owl over void terror working out very well! I was debating between those 2 as well. I think owl is just as good

  5. Drewgen says:

I absolutely love this deck. It’s so much fun to play, and with a Ironbeak Owl swapped in for a Void Terror it’s actually pretty viable. It’s weak against quick Hunters and Zoo, but if you spot that your opponent is running one of these decks early on, instead of life tapping you can drop you Nerubian Eggs, Ancient Watchers and Sunfury Protectors to really slow them down, and then get the big guns out later.
Plus there are few experiences in Hearthstone more satisfying than wiping an almost full zoo board with Hellfire, and it also releasing your two Nerubians!

    • Lyra says:

I think it’s really fun taunting the eggs too, and just watching your opponent look at them awkwardly, without any clean removal for them.

Ah! So that’s why the deck wasn’t working for me. I was playing the eggs early instead of playing it mid-game. Thanks for explaining the mechanics Kisstafer.
