Welcome to this week’s “What Would DKMR Do?” Each week we’ll present an in-game situation and discuss the possible lines of play. Here’s the scenario for this week:

Shaman v. Rogue WWDKMRD4

Sometimes in Hearthstone you don’t have all the answers. While we’d prefer to use an Earth Shock or Hex on this Edwin Van Cleef, we’re going to have to find an alternative means of dealing with the deadly rogue. How would you do it?

Joseph Lee Wackowski said:

I would personally play yeti. When my turn came back around, if he hit the yeti i would lightning bolt feral and if he didnt i would flametongue the yeti to kill the edwin then feral.

Ronin agreed, stating:

I’d just play Yeti. It’s too early in the game for the Rogue to burst us down, so the priority should be using your mana efficiently. If Yeti stays alive we can buff it next turn, if he kills it with his minion we can Lightning Bolt it next turn.

In fact, everyone agreed that playing Chillwind Yeti was the best play.

Ozmodan37 said:

Yeti is the strongest opening play with guaranteed removal the following turn, whether Edwin goes for the face or the yeti.

Alcaras Argentus said:

I’d play the Yeti, which leaves us with mana to play Doomhammer next turn if he kills Yeti with VC or play Flametongue totem to enhance Yeti if he goes for the face.

And Chill said:

I’d probably drop the yeti. I feel like playing feral spirits would eliminate most of your potential plays on the next turn.

So what would DKMR do?

We’d play the Yeti.

As you all astutely pointed out, it allows you to best trade for Edwin Van Cleef, either with Lightning Bolt or Flametongue Totem on the following turn. Playing Feral Spirit chokes your mana on your next turn, uses your mana inefficiently this turn, and doesn’t improve your board state much more than playing Yeti. Your only other viable option is to use your Hero Power, but that is a very passive play which will potentially allow the Edwin Van Cleef to get out of control.

It’s worth noting that Sap is a very strong counter to playing Chillwind Yeti and will likely allow Edwin to get in for 12 damage over two turns. Despite this, playing Chillwind Yeti is still the strongest play and the most likely play to have a positive outcome on the following turn.

Another thing we want to point out is that you’re pretty far ahead of the Rogue player in this scenario. You’re two cards and four life ahead. While the life is not very significant, you have a lot of resources at your disposal. It is particularly important to note that the Rogue only has three cards in hand. While a Concealed Gadgetzan Auctioneer may be in your future, it’s much more likely the Rogue is holding awkward spells like Shiv and Preparation. While losing the Yeti may be painful, the loss is worth the ultimate gain, especially considering your resource advantage.

Next week we’ll be talking about the scenario below. What would you do? Let us know in the comments!

Conservatively: Play a Violet Teacher, smack the Pally in the face, renew the blade and rebuff it for a 1/1 on the board as well. Leaving him at 20hp and giving you board control while helping to empty your hand, which was full.

Aggressively: Play Leeroy twice with Shadowstep and hit him with your blade. (15 damage. He’s now at 8). You’re hoping you can draw into an Eviscerate next turn when you’d: Renew blade. Buff it for 1Mana. Play Combo’d Evis’ and combo’d SI:7 and hit his face for the last little bit. (This all assumes he didn’t heal or play a taunt – it’s risky).

    • WhatsHisFace says:

If Taunted but didn’t heal and you drew an Evis’ after aggressive play you could play Thalnos to get combo’d SI:7 + Evis’ for lethal (8damage).

    • Celton says:

According to the log on the left he’s already used both eviscerates.

  2. cosmeagol says:

Id play deadly poison > si7 > edwin. Id consider attacking with the hero if i suspect he might have an ooze, otherwise keep it ( harrison is not an issue, uses most of his mana and we still got lethal with double leeroy). This option uses the least ammount of resources and gives potential lethal next turn with mana for sap on a taunter and leeroyx2. He basically needs to get rid of 2 of our 3 threats or drop 3 taunts (or a combination of these).

    • cosmeagol says:

ive just noticed from the log that he has used equality + concecrate on his last turn, which is one of the few easy answers to this play, making it even better imho.

  3. CFDragon06 says:

Here’s the play I see to set up lethal for next turn, especially if he uses the whole turn on playing his Tirion that he wants so bad. This turn is Thalnos, SI:7 to the face, hit with dagger, hero power, pass. This puts the Pally at 17. If he just plays Tirion, you have sap, double Leeroy, plus 5 on board to win. If he answers your board, you have Violet Teacher>Deadly Poison>Edwin, which should set up the win the following turn. Also leaves you with many other options. You don’t want to play Azure because of overdraw potential. The other reason I choose this path is that the most damage he could do on 8 mana is 14 that I can come up with, and no matter what, you lose to a 20 damage holy wrath. 😛

    • cosmeagol says:

thalnos doesnt increase SI-7 damage (only spells), so you leave him at 18 and cant do lethal next turn if he plays a taunt (tyrion or otherwise)

      • CFDragon06 says:

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn’t add damage from Thalnos to SI, but in my head said the 23-5=17.

So the safe play is Violet Teacher into Edwin Van Cleef. This is setting up to try and win in two more turns.

If you feel that you need to win the next turn, then I’d Edwin, Shadowstep, SI:7, then Edwin. This leaves the opponent at 21 with you having a 3/3 and an 8/8 on board. This leaves the option to do 11 damage next turn with Leeroy and Deadly Poison, and still have the ability to sap a single taunter. I’m a more aggressive player so this is the play I’d make, now that my math is correct 😉

  4. Jeremysclone says:

There are two plays that I see. The first is play poison, si:7 to the face, edwin, then hit face with dagger. This sets up a difficult to deal with board and gives a pretty good shot at lethal the next turn. However, paladins run humility and peacekeeper and so that could really hurt the big van cleef plan. The other play is to just violet teacher and edwin. If he plays guardian of kings, you can just trade in the edwin and use si:7 to finish it, and then build up the board some more. If he plays tirion, you can sap and poison, and then the next time tirion is played kill him with the 2 1/1s and the 5/1 dagger. And if he humility kodos one of the two minions, either one of them can hit the kodo, live, and then you can finish it off with si. Both teacher and edwin can take a hit from tazdingo too, which is nice. If anyone notices anything wrong with either of these strategies, lemme know 🙂 I didn’t think of all the possibilities too hard

    • cosmeagol says:

What i really like about the first play (its the same i posted and on second thought i agree with you on attacking with the 6/1 dagger this turn as the odds of him playing 3 taunts is slim) its that its not really dependant on the edwin. If he goes peacekeeper on the edwin you still have lethal with double leeroy + si7. He would have do something like peacekeeper both minions or peacekeper + holy light (does any pally even run that?) Or humility + 2 taunts or have his remainig equality+consecration. All of these requiere him to have very specific cards or lose the game

  5. Ozmodan37 says:

Poison, attack face, SI:7, Edwin. If everything goes right, there should be lethal the next turn with Leeroy.

  6. Tiago says:

Violet Teacher + SI 7 Agent to the face. He’s down to 21. Next turn, if your board is still there, lethal withe Leeroy + Shadowstep + dagger. If he taunts, you still have mana for the Sap.

If he went Equality + Consacration or Avenging Wrath, most likely he will have nothing or just a small minion on the board, so the stinuation is good to develop a big Van Cleef.

Paladins can’t usually burst 19 damage, so you should be OK for the next couple turns to do this play.
