Tournament Watch: WEC Hearthstone World Cup

by - 10 years ago

Do you know one of the things I really like about competition? It motivates the other guys/gals to work extra hard to unseat the people at the top. In this case, I’m looking at tournament organizers. Since the inception of the Hearthstone eSports scene, it seems like month by month, new and old organizers alike have been raising the bar – more players; more days; bigger stakes! When you stop to think about it, it makes sense – as the scene shows more stability for success, bigger projects will be “greenlighted”. Enter the WEC Hearthstone World Cup.

This tournament is a brand-new reworking of an older series that now features a Hearthstone component. Under the new title of World E-Sport Championship (WEC) and backed by multiple companies/organizers in China, the slate of competition promises big action and big money for multiple eSports such as Starcraft II, DOTA, etc. Hearthstone participants will be in the running for a pot comprised of $62,000 (the largest prize pool for a Hearthstone tournament to date).

The main event won’t go off until September 6th-8th, but the qualifiers will determine the 8 players (two from each region – Americas, Europe, China, and Korea) that get to travel to China for that weekend in September. Fellow fan site 2P has been given the honors of hosting the qualifier tournaments for the Americas and Europe regions.

The qualifiers are invitation-only, so we’ll be watching from the sidelines unless you’re one of the following people:

NA Invited Players:
Amaz
Strifecro
Realz
Tidesoftime
Alchemixt
Reynad
Brad
Firebat

EU Invited Players:
Gnimsh
Rdu
ek0p
Savjz
ThijsNL
Kolento
Darkwonyx
Semijew

(Lists provided by 2P’s official announcement.)

The NA/Americas qualifier is set to take place between July 25th to July 27th and the Europe qualifier is set for August 1st to August 3rd, so mark your calendars now! Dan “Artosis” Stemkoski and Dan “Frodan” Chou will be your casters for the live stream. This ought to be a ton of fun to watch and I hope you’ll help me start up the hype train from now until those first cards get played!

For additional rules and information, feel free to visit 2P’s announcement.
