Fireside Chat: What’s Your Take on Dreamhack?

by - 10 years ago

** Spoiler Warning – This post discusses the outcome of the Dreamhack Summer tournament that was played the weekend of June 14th, 2014. **

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this past week, it’s been pretty hard for even the most casual of Hearthstone eSports fans to have missed out on the controversy surrounding the games played between Amaz and RDU at Dreamhack Summer last weekend. If you did somehow miss it, essentially, during the final match up between RDU and Amaz, RDU received a message late in the 2nd game from somebody on his friends list that mentioned some of the cards in Amaz’s hand. At the conclusion of the game, RDU spoke to the administrators and it was decided at that time not to remake the game; that the outcome had already been an inevitability, even without the knowledge of Amaz’s cards. The only stipulation the admins placed at that time before continuing was for both players to remove all of their friends from their lists before the next game.

As can be expected, social media blew up this week discussing all aspects surrounding this controversy. There were multiple posts on /r/hearthstone, tweets from highly visible members of the community and even Amaz himself spoke out later that evening from his hotel room. Yesterday, June 17th, Artosis provided his unique perspective as a community leader and one of the casters at the event.

Everybody seems to have an opinion one way or another regarding the event as a whole and the controversial incident specifically. This is something that we on the Hearthstone team here at BlizzPro have been discussing quite a bit internally and we are planning on a special feature in an upcoming episode of the HearthPro Show podcast where we would like to read out and discuss some of your opinions on this HOT topic.

So, how about you guys? What’s your take on the subject? Is RDU at fault? Did the admins handle the situation properly? Was this something that could have been avoided somehow? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or on Twitter – @HearthProShow.

I think that Blizzard might be better off with creating tournament accounts that have everything unlocked, wiped after every match (similar to how they have BlizzCon modes that autowipe after logging)

yeah, because it is so hard to prevent those thing from happening …
we need to discuss it for the next 2 months …

I’ve seen a few different suggestions for improvement thrown around, but I don’t like many of them. I think the simplest method for moving forward is to bolster the pre-existing chat functionality. That doesn’t mean make chat more prevalent though. Quite the contrary, adding a Do Not Disturb mode/status (or even call it Tournament Status) that does not allow messages to be received at all while you have that status up could be a very easy fix.

You can’t really control what happens between games, as texts from friends informing players other people’s decks could occur and most competitors will watch their potential opponents’ games anyway, but we definitely do need to be able to control the environment of games in progress and the above would be one simple step forward.

Or, honestly, Blizzard, just enable the Appear Offline mode that you promised us YEARS ago for Battle.net (http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/7315730/appear-offline-option-coming-soon-to-battlenet-9-20-2012).

The problem with creating so-called “tournament accounts” that don’t have friends on the list is that those accounts may have access to cards that participants wouldn’t have access to on their own private account, thus giving them more resources than they technically have earned.

Otherwise, I thought Dreamhack Summer was easily the best Hearthstone tournament we’ve seen so far in terms of production, caster quality, and dissemination to the public.

Need an offline mode that Blizzard said was coming to Battle.net 2 years ago.

Blizzard needs to up their tournament game. RDU’s not at fault.

  6. Kevin Jones says:

Not his fault or problem. This is the problem with live tournaments honestly. Have it prerecorded or on delay and this isnt an issue.
