Tavern Takeover: A Look at Alchemixt’s Decks
by JR Cook - 10 years ago show comments
Tavern Takeover is a Hearthstone tournament where 8 players get invited to compete for a $3,000 prize pool. The tournament streamed yesterday and you can watch the vods on their Twitch channel. This week we’re going to cover the top 4 players in the tournament and look at their deck lists.
Tavern Takeover uses the King of the Hill style approach with their tournament where each player brings 3 decks. Once a deck loses it’s out, if your deck wins it goes on to play the next game. It’s a best of 5 series, so basically you win by knocking out all 3 decks of your opponent.
Today we’re going to focus on 4th place player Alchemixt and his decks. Several of our BlizzPro readers will be familiar with Alchemixt when he was on team Don’t Kick My Robot. He was the author of several of our Deck of the Week articles before he moved on to bigger and better things with Team Curse.
Face Hunter
Alchemixt played very aggressively in the tournament by choosing 3 aggro decks. The fastest of the 3 was what he called Face Hunter, which you can guess strategy for this deck, go for the face. The most expensive mana cost card in this deck is at 4 with a lone Leeroy Jenkins. He has some card draw potential with Flare, Tracking, and Starving Buzzard but ultimately it looks like this deck is meant to win by turn 7/turn 8 and if you don’t win by that time frame then you’re probably going to have a bad time.

Zoo
This is a fairly standard Warlock Zoo deck. Play lots of dudes and the only spells are 2 Soulfires and 1 Poweroverwhelming. The entire idea of a zoo deck is to overwhelm your opponent with constantly putting out more and more low cost creatures and then quickly repopulating the board using the Warlock hero power to draw more. If you’ve played any kind of ladder in the last few months this deck will be very familiar as it’s one of the most popular.

Aggro Mage
The Aggro Mage Deck is back! Well, sort of. This isn’t like the old school Moon Mage deck we saw in early beta that focused around small costing minions. Instead this deck focuses on small casting spells, buffing up your Mana Wyrm and trying to get your opponent down to 10 life or less to finish them off with a Pyroblast.
Unfortunately, mage just isn’t in a great spot right now. Even though you’re starting to see them more thanks to the rejuvenation of aggro mages and freeze mages, the meta just doesn’t seem to be ready for mages quite yet. Alchemixt even seemed to agree with this on his tweet after the tournament:
Had a blast playing/watching #TavernTakeover I learned a lot and will be practicing much more this month. Also, never playing Mage again aha
