Budget Deck of the Week: Warlock Zoo Alternative

by - 10 years ago

With Hearthstone on the iPad releasing, we’re starting to see a lot of new players entering the game. While we provide several deck lists from a competitive angle, we tend to look at them from a perspective that players will have access to all of the cards to build their decks. This isn’t always the case as Hearthstone is a Free to Play game where you can spend money to get more packs or not spend a single dime and grind your way to the cards that you need. Going the free to play route will take you longer to acquire those cards, so how can you be competitive if you don’t have everything?

Well, lucky for you, Hearthstone is not Pay to Win (as opposed to what people say) and there are ways you can make competitive decks on the cheap – or in this case, free. All it takes is the right combination and some skill in understanding how the game works and lots of practice to learn a deck.

For those players who are looking for a competitive angle without spending any money in the game, we bring you the budget deck of the week. The rules of our budget decks are simple, they cannot contain any legendary cards and will have very few rares and epics. This means that if you have leveled up all your classes to level 10 in Hearthstone you should have access to most, if not all, of these cards.

In the current meta game, Warlock Zoo and Hunter are the primary decks you will see in ranked play. They are efficient and fast decks and honestly don’t take as much skill as a more control heavy deck does. They’re also relatively cheap to build as well.

Warlock Zoo is all about putting out small creatures, life tapping, and getting more creatures to put out. You make efficient trades on the board and eventually just overwhelm your opponent with the vast amount of tiny creatures you put out starting at turn 1.

This particular deck is TrumpSC’s version of Warlock Zoo which is a free to play deck that he was able to take all the way to legendary in 184 games. This particular zoo deck plays a little differently as it’s a little more focused on board control than just going to the face. Because of this, you’re not going to see some finishers like you see in some zoo decks such as Power Overwhelming, Arcane Golem, or Leeroy Jenkins. Keep in mind though, that even though this deck is about controlling the board, it’s a very aggressive deck. If you fall behind or lose tempo, you will more than likely lose the match.

Wow that’s a really innovative deck!
I don’t think i’ve seen anything like it before, WoW! a shield bearer and elven archer.

Yeah, I think Trump’s is the best of the Warlock Zoos (budget or otherwise). Some quick replacements in case you don’t have all of the cards to compete Trump’s exact version: Blood Imp (for the Priestess), Demolisher (for the Knife Juggler), Dark Iron Dwarf (for the Defender of Argus), Reckless Rocketeer (for either the Argent Commander of Doomguard).

My version of the Warlock Zoo (partially because I don’t have all the cards and partially due to strategic concerns) can be found here: http://www.wowhead.com/deck=42256

I’d rather replace the knife juggler with a faerie dragon if you don’t have them. demolishers are just… they cost too much to me for their value.
Although maybe you could get use from them in a paladin zoo deck where you have optional shields and bigger threats for removal/silencing.

Just for starters blood knight might not be ideal as it is still epic. Can be substituted with abusive sergants though.

  4. Brigadon says:

I found that the young priestesses sorta… underperform. and blood knights? really? this is a budget deck?
My version uses fairy dragons (mageproofing), replaces the soulfire with power overwhelming, and includes a couple of utility/threat cards to sponge up removal, namely . It has been more successful than a strictly zoo deck for me, and is extremely cheap as well.

    2x mortal coil
    2x power overwhelming
    2x flame imp
    2x void walker
    2x void terror
    2x shadowflame
    2x doomguard

    2x Argent Squire
    2x dire wolf alpha
    2x Faerie Dragon
    2x ironbeak owl
    2x harvest golem
    2x scarlet crusader
    2x shattered sun cleric
    2x defender of argus

It has quite a bit more control than most zoo decks, despite the loss of the shieldbearers. What it has, however, is much stronger ability to trash OTHER zoo decks, which typically have no removal besides the expensive soulfires or blowing off a doomguard. It allows you to kill a mage by turn 6 handily if left unmolested, and decent removal of it’s own in the form of shielded minions.

Cost-wise, the only expensive cards are the two doom guards, without which very very few warlock decks work. The void terror+ dire wolf buffed minion, or void terror eating a power overwhelming character, is a serious threat which demands immediate response or death, often leaving the way clear for later doomguards to get at least two attacks instead of their usual one, and if not removed ca completely dominate the board for the few turns neccessary to destroy someone in the leading meta.

Basically, the meta has changed to heavy rush, miracle, and pure zoo netdecking, and you need a creative solution rather than zoo v1, and you need it NOW rather than when you can afford a couple of insane blood knights.

Lock must not be my class… most these budget decks are pretty good for me, but this one just doesn’t work for me

      • Brigadon says:

meh, some people make decisions different ways, and some of it is pure luck. The deck has performed generally extremely well, but the other day I dropped 4 places in a few hours. Sometimes the RNG gods just hate you.

I will admit that I replaced the faeries and owls back to the original knife/shields, though. Meta changed, rush decks are back in style. Today, at least.

  5. Radical says:

    Um, okay.
This deck is not even close to free.
Requires 1200-ish Dust just like almost every Zoo deck.
Getting all classes to 10 won’t get you any of those uncommons or rares.
You won’t have Priestess, Juggler, Blood Knight, Harvest, Commander or Doomguard, ie you won’t have any of the pieces you need.

  6. Warren Samu says:

Brilliant deck! I’ve been flying through ranked with 1 or 2 card variations. So many useful card combos. Thank you for sharing this with the community 🙂
