Weekly Spotlight: Abomination

by - 10 years ago

With hundreds of minions, spells and weapons to choose from, where do you start? You can start right here: every Thursday, we will feature one card in our Weekly Spotlight and share with you how to use it in your constructed deck.

Abomination

Abomination (5M/4D/4H. Taunt. Deathrattle: Deal 2 damage to ALL characters. Abominations enjoy Fresh Meat and long walks on the beach.” Crafted: 100 Arcane Dust.)

The announcement of the upcoming Adventure Mode “Curse of Naxxaramas” was one of the major highlights for Hearthstone fans at PAX East. The follow-up interview our own Leviathan conducted with Eric Dodds and Jason Chayes revealed that cards with Deathrattle would feature prominently in that single player campaign.

While we don’t know much about the 30 new cards that will be introduced in that campaign, the emphasis on the Deathrattle mechanic led me to highlight the Abomination in this week’s Spotlight feature.

At 5 Mana, this creature isn’t a particularly strong play. If you’re looking for a strong Taunt minion, the Sen’jin Shieldmasta is a far better value. If you need removal, depending on your deck cards like Holy Nova do just as well without crippling your Mana resources.

So why even bother with the  Abomination?

Clearly the order of play is of utmost importance to ensure that you are getting the most out of him. If you know that the Abomination will destroy your own lower health minions with the activation of Deathrattle, then use those minions to bring larger enemy minions into the proper range of the 2 Damage AOE effect.

Alternatively, use the damage to help clear your opponent’s side while triggering potential Enrage abilities (for example those of the Raging Worgen and Amani Berserker). The 2 Damage Deathrattle seems to pair well with the Priest. Paired with the an offsetting  Holy Nova and possibly taking advantage of the hero ability, the Abomination almost takes on the role of a Flamestrike equivalent for Priests.

Ultimately, the Abomination is like a hand grenade, but given its Taunt ability, you are the one (to some degree) who pulls the pin (unless your opponent ruins the fun by playing Silence).

Don’t overlook that the damage triggered will affect all characters, including friendly minions, your hero, and your opponent’s hero. While rare, that might just be enough to win – or lose – the game for you.

And if you think one “hand grenade” is fun, how about 14?
