Sure, you can play that winning card and step away from your match the glorious victor. But where is the fun unless you can also drop some lore knowledge on your opponent and add insult to injury? Poor Defender of Argus: despite his recent nerf, he’s still out there, bravely defending Argus. As his card note points out, you wouldn’t think that Argus would need this much defending…

So let’s talk for a moment who or what Argus actually is that requires such a hefty minion to come to its defense. Argus was the home planet of the Eredar, a place where these intelligent and magically gifted beings dwelled for millennia. Archimonde, Kil’jaeden, and Velen ruled Argus together.

The demon Sargeras, in his quest to find lieutenants for this Burning Legion, came to realize the potential of the Eredar for his cause. He offered Kil’jaeden and Archimonde untold power in exchange for their loyalty.

The two accepted with little hesitation, but Velen, haunted by a vision of the downfall of his people under Sargera’s corruption, declined the offer. Velen and his followers fled, and he renamed his people “the exiled ones”, or Draenei.

While we know of the fate of Kil’jaeden and Archimonde, what exactly happened to Argus isn’t quite clear. The demonic presence of the Burning Legion may have destroyed Argus, or simply altered the planet beyond repair.
