Weekly Spotlight: Elite Tauren Chieftain

by - 10 years ago

With hundreds of minions, spells and weapons to choose from, where do you start? You can start right here: every Thursday, we will feature one card in our Weekly Spotlight and share with you how to use it in your constructed deck.

ETC

Elite Tauren Chieftain (5M, 5D, 5D, Battlecry: Give both players the power to ROCK! (with a 4M Power Chord card). He’s looking for a drummer.  The current candidates are: Novice Engineer, Sen’jin Shieldmasta’, and Ragnaros the Firelord.”)

With this week’s release of the latest Hearthstone patch, the Elite Tauren Chieftain is finally available in game, which means players with a BlizzCon virtual ticket can now claim the golden version for one of their decks, and everybody else can craft this minion (although not the gold version) for 1600 Arcane Dust. Is he worth it? You betcha. Should you be playing him in your deck? That depends on a number of factors, so let’s take a look.

Why you should play it: For starters, the 5 Mana and 5 Attack combination is very strong. There are very few minions available with this much punch at turn five, and there are even fewer when you want at least 5 Health minimum. Five Health is a key number in that it pushes the Elite Tauren Chieftain beyond the point of many board clearing spells such as Flamestrike or Hellfire.

All by itself, this minion card is well worth bringing into play. But there is also the bonus 4 Mana Power Chord card which both players will receive. That Power Chord card is either I Am Murloc (Summon three, four, or five 1/1 Murlocs), Power of the Horde (Summon a random Horde Warrior; so far, Cairne Bloodhoof, Frostwolf GruntTauren Warrior, Sen’jin Shieldmasta, Thrallmar Farseer, and Silvermoon Guardian have been confirmed as possible minions), or Rogues Do It… (Deal 4 damage. Draw a card.).

MurlocPowerOfTheHordeRogues

If you are wondering where some of these card names come from, then you are not familiar with L70ETC’s greatest hits. All of these rockin’ spells are an amazing value for a 4 Mana play the next turn (or same turn on turn 9 or later).

Why you shouldn’t play it: As awesome as these spell cards are, both you and your opponent will receive one of them. Perhaps you like your turn 5 minions nice and safe, and hate the idea of RNG potentially dumping a 4 Mana Cairne Bloodhoof into your opponent’s hand. And perhaps you also hate fun.

I’ve had this played against me twice already. In one of the cases, I got a Rogues Do It… card. I already had an Azure Drake out, so on the next turn, I killed the ETC and drew a card.
Probably won’t ever play with this card, EXCEPT when just goofing off.
