Weekly Spotlight: Twilight Drake

by - 10 years ago

With hundreds of minions, spells and weapons to choose from, where do you start? You can start right here: every Thursday, we will feature one card in our Weekly Spotlight and share with you how to use it in your constructed deck.

TwilightDrake

Twilight Drake (4M, 4D, 1H, Battlecry: Gain +1 Health for each card in your hand. “Twilight drakes feed on Mystical Energy. And tacos.”)

A while back, we discussed a selection of cards we considered great choices for almost any deck. High on that list was the Chillwind Yeti.

An interesting high-risk/high reward alternative to the Chillwind Yeti is the Twilight Drake. It is a rare quality card, so it will need to be purchased or crafted, and it is virtually identical to the Chillwind Yeti – with one exception. For any additional card (not counting this card) in hand, the Twilight Drake will gain 1 extra health.

Especially in control decks that are build around card draw abilities and in priest decks, this minion can be a very potent play for you. When I play it in a modified version of my Mage deck, it usually enters the field with more than 5 Health. This elevates the Twilight Drake above most major damage spells and attacks, and at 4 Damage, it can help eliminate a number of minions in the early and mid-level rounds.

One of the aspects of Hearthstone that I really enjoy is developing a deck, trying it out, then making modifications to see how the changes improve of hinder the deck’s performance. The Twilight drake is a great example for that. There are a number of cards in this particular range of 4M/4D minions, but the Twilight drake stands out with its modifiable Health value. If you are running the Chillwind Yeti or one of the other minions on that list, then I encourage you to give the drake a try during your next play test run.

For defensive consideration: The Twilight drake can be silenced, dropping all its health back to 1. If you are running a shaman deck, Earth Shock will insta-kill this minion.

Are there any cards that synergize with Dragons the way there are for murlocs, pirates and beasts?

I think you should bring Frostwolf Warlord under the spotlight next time. He’s a powerful asset to every minion heavy deck and I’m not sure I can use his potential to the fullest.

Thanks for the suggestion! I write some of these features a bit in advance, so this week’s spotlight is already set to be released on Thursday. I’ll put the Frostwolf Warlord up very soon!

With the amount of Silence running around, I’d probably put this guy slightly below the Yeti for Arena purposes, and slightly below the Ogre Magi in the Mage constructed deck due to the +1 Spellpower.

Not discounting this as a very solid play, just with the volume of Owl/Spellbreaker cards currently played, this is a Medium Risk/Low Reward play compared to it’s 4 cast brothers.
